My name is Ron Philippsborn.\u00a0Together with my family I live in Olympia, Washington,\nUSA.\u00a0My Great-grandfather, Heymann Arzt \u2013 the father of\u00a0my\u00a0father\u2019s mother \u2013 was born in\nTremessen (Trzemeszno) in 1866.\u00a0He wrote A Memoir and Diary which my father translated,\nand which both talks about his early years and describes the town he grew up in.<\/span>
<\/p>\n

Unlike many of the Jewish families in Trzemeszno, the Arzts did not have deep roots in the\ncommunity.\u00a0According to the Diary, Heymann\u2019s father, Nathan, moved there from Schubin\n(Szubin) in early 1840; Heymann departed for Berlin in 1888 to raise his family there\n(although his sister and two brothers did not leave at that time).\u00a0That branch of our family\nlargely emigrated from Germany to escape the Nazis during the 1930s, with members ending\nup in all corners of the globe.\u00a0My parents spent their teens in the Dominican Republic,\nmarried there, and came to the United States in 1948.<\/span>
<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Reading the Memoir, one is struck by how ordinary an account it gives of Heymann\u2019s life.\u00a0He\ngrows up, deals with the death of his father and his mother\u2019s second marriage, goes to the\npublic Jewish school, becomes an apprentice, hates his boss . . . but still the sense of\n\u201cotherness\u201d is pronounced.\u00a0Nathan needed a \u201cCertificate of Toleration,\u201d renewable annually,\nto be allowed to settle in Trzemeszno.\u00a0At the time Heymann was born, Jews hadn\u2019t yet gained\nequal civil rights; that happened in Prussia in 1869.\u00a0Although he lived in a Prussian town\npopulated to a large extent by Poles, his family interacted primarily with the rest of the Jewish\ncommunity, where they lived, went to school, worked, shopped, worshipped, celebrated and\ngrieved.<\/p>\n


Apparently, it was a peaceful, ordinary town with a Jewish population that largely kept to\nitself, but went about its business as part of the community. Happily, there is little mention of\nproblems with their non-Jewish neighbours. What\u00a0is\u00a0interesting is that it was during the\nperiod that the Arzts were living there that (according to Wikipedia) Tremessen became one\nof the main centres of the national liberation movement, which culminated in the town being\nreclaimed (and renamed) by Poland after the First World War.\u00a0The fact that my great-\ngrandfather does not mention this suggests that the Jews of Tremessen either chose not to\ninvolve themselves in the matter, or were simply unaware of what was going on between their\nPolish and Prussian neighbours.\u00a0Still, it\u2019s reasonable to assume that Poles, Germans and Jews\nsomehow lived together for many decades, managing to coexist and thrive despite profound\ncultural differences, identities and aspirations.\u00a0It\u2019s an encouraging story of acceptance and\ntolerance (even if they most likely kept to themselves as much as possible and ignored the\nother communities most of the time).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Clearly, Trzemeszno has an interesting story to tell, with the waves of history washing back\nand forth across it over the centuries. The story of the Jewish population there is as integral to\nthat history as the accounts of the Native Americans and subsequent waves of immigrants are\nto my own country.\u00a0I\u2019m delighted that an effort is being made to preserve that history,\nparticularly in the context of the community as a whole, with all of its constituent\npopulations.\u00a0One can only hope that current political and ethnic tensions do not diminish the\nappreciation of the people of Trzemeszno for\u00a0all\u00a0the facets of their fascinating history, of\nwhich their one-time Jewish neighbours were an integral part, and which helped make\nTrzemeszno the place it is today.\u00a0And preserving the old Jewish cemetery as a historical site\nwill undoubted be an important\u00a0step toward accomplishing that.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
